(NYDAILYNEWS) – Notre Dame still stands.
The widespread blaze that engulfed the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris Monday did not destroy the historic building, the city’s police chief said.
While the full devastation of the fire is still unclear and likely will be for hours at least, officials said the cathedral had been saved from “total destruction.”
French fire officials told reporters Monday night that crews fighting the massive blaze at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris might not be able to save any of its remains.
Jean-Claude Gallet, commander general of the Paris Fire Brigade, initially said his greatest concern was that the great bells would fall and cause the whole tower to collapse.
Hundreds of firefighters were battling the fire at the iconic centuries-old structure even as much of the building, including the roof and central spire, were already destroyed.
