Millions of Americans could lose food stamps under new eligibility rules

(NYPOST) – Millions of people could lose their food stamps, with New Yorkers being particularly hard hit, under new eligibility rules, according to the Urban Institute.

The nonprofit found that if proposed stricter Department of Agriculture work requirements had been implemented last year, 3.7 million fewer people and 2.1 million fewer households would have received food stamps, and benefits would have decreased by $4.2 billion.

Those receiving assistance in New York and Connecticut would fare particularly badly, The Guardian reported.

Some 2 million households nationwide would see their average monthly assistance cut by $127, the institute said.
