Gunman turns gun on himself after six-hour stand-off with cops

(DAILY MAIL) – A suspect in a shooting that left one person dead and two others injured has killed himself after a six-hour stand-off with police a Super 8 motel in Illinois.

Police responded to reports of shots fired at the motel on Colosseum Drive in Rockford just before 1am local time Sunday.

Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea said responding officers discovered three victims, one man and two women, with gunshot wounds. The man, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene and the women were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

O’Shea said a SWAT team stationed outside the motel exchanged multiple rounds of gunfire with the male suspect, who had barricaded himself in a room.

The suspect was confirmed dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound at about 6.45am.

Police say occupants of the hotel were evacuated and the public was advised to stay away from the area.

As of 5.25am, active gunfire was still being heard by witnesses on the scene.

Police made a forced entry into the barricaded motel room at around 6.30am and found the suspect dead.

O’Shea said the shooting was the result of a prior domestic dispute. He did not believe the suspect was from Rockford.

The motel incident was the second fatal shooting in Rockford, which is home to about 153,000 people about 90 miles northwest of Chicago, in the span of three hours.

A 21-year-old man was shot and killed at a nearby Stop-N-Go store just before 10pm. It’s unclear whether the incidents are related.
