FIJI: Five-year-old drowns during family picnic

(FBCNEWS) – Another life has been lost to drowning. The victim is a five-year-old boy from Vunidogoloa Village.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirms the boy was with his family when the alleged incident took place on Monday in Savusavu.

A post mortem will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death as investigations continue.

This is the tenth drowning incident in a span of three weeks.

A three-year-old boy drowned in Wailoku river in Suva yesterday.

The drowning toll now stands at 32 compared to 25 for the same period last year.

Police have once again stressed the importance of supervision.

Naisoro says children need to be supervised at all times as their unpredictable and inquisitive nature can often lead them to do things without fully understanding its devastating consequences.

Police officers have been visiting picnic spots and popular swimming spots emphasizing the importance of safety however it all boils down to supervision.
