St. Vincent: Condemn homosexuality but embrace adultery?

The filing on Friday, July 26, by two gay men of court proceedings to challenge St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ (SVG’s) “buggery” and “gross indecency” laws, which have criminalised homosexuality since the early days of colonialism has provoked a firestorm of controversy in the country.

This can be seen from the hundreds of Bible-thumping negative comments on Facebook to scrapping these two pieces of archaic and inhumane legislation rooted in the deep seated paranoid antipathy to what is locally called “bulling” among men. Meanwhile, there has always been a general indifference to the even more widespread practice of lesbianism, locally termed “zammie.”

Though this issue will be the talk of the town for some time to come, little attention is being paid to the other constitutional, legal, and moral issues these cases raise.

Like most other Caribbean nations, SVG has a tripartite constitutionally-based separation of powers between the three branches of government: executive (which, among other things, develops and enforces laws), legislative (which passes laws in parliament), and judicial (which rules on the law).

There would be a clear conflict of interest if Speaker of the House of Assembly, Jomo Thomas, made a parliamentary ruling in a case that he, barrister Jomo Thomas, has a direct interest in as legal counsel for these two gay plaintiffs. This could well happen if the government (executive) tried to pass a law in parliament aimed at overruling a court decision that the anti-buggery/gross indecency laws are unconstitutional (which they certainly are, as shown in other Caribbean countries with nearly identical constitutions, making this an easy slam-dunk for the petitioners in these two cases).

Equally important, it is only in countries like SVG where a comingling of competing roles is the norm that allow the Speaker and other parliamentarians to continue to practice private law while in public office. Indeed, all parliamentarians who have some side business, including those that might involve gaining government contracts, are allowed to fully control them while in office.

On the government’s response to these cases, I suspect that Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, a champion of human rights, is sympathetic to the plight of unfairly vilified homosexuals in pseudo-puritanical SVG and would try to argue that his hands are tied by the court when it rules that the two relevant laws are unconstitutional. If I am wrong, he could easily hold a referendum on both this issue and the equally vexing capital crime matter to amend the constitution to include the criminalization of homosexuality and the use of executions for those found guilty of murder.

He would do no such thing knowing that they would both net 70-80 percent of the votes cast, in the process placing SVG in the same category with the minority of countries that continue to criminalize homosexuality.

As for the moral-religious issue of homosexuality, I call SVG a pseudo-puritanical country because, contrary to basic Christian teachings, the nation is so pre- and extra-marital hyper-sexualized that: (1) few girls over the age of 15 still have their virginity, (2) some 80 percent of births are to single mothers, (3) many women have children from several different partners, sometimes unsure of who actually fathered their offspring, (4) informal prostitution is so widespread that it is accepted as normal that a man “hand up his hand” [“give money or other gifts”] when engaged in a relationship with a woman that is actually based on mutual attraction and affection even if both parties have the same financial resources, (5) many men of all ages take pride and are praised for bedding two or more women at the same time, and (6) chronic adultery, for love or money, is common among both sexes.

It seems as if SVG’s so-called Christians are deliberately ignorant of or indifferent to the place in Scripture where these acts are mentioned in the same breath and with the exactly the same punishment as homosexuality, namely 1 Corinthians 6:9-11:

“Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers — none of these will inherit the kingdom of God. And this is what some of you used to be. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.”

The Apostle Paul, chosen by Jesus to spread the Gospel, wrote these words. But his warning has certainly fallen on deaf ears among the countless “unwashed” and “unsanctified” hypocrites in SVG who demonize sodomy while upholding all the other equal sins that the New Testament says will doom them to burn in hell for eternity.

  1. Which side you on ? Are you for God Jehovah or Satan and his evil ways it either one or the other this is a spiritual battle against the things that are evil and demonic as Christian ambassador here we have to take our stand and defend those laws and the things of our Heavenly father whenever wherever they are fight against by man or demonic forces homosexual act weather between two man or two woman this sexual abominations sin was part of baal worship in the bible it was part of the religious ritual in the worship to baal who is really Satan all sin are forgiven in true repentance this sexual homosexual act is hated by God why? it goes all the way back to satan it is demonic some sins are judged more severe than other and all sin are condemned we are all judge by God individually by how we as a Christian live our lives by his words okay Jehovah God did not get the Heathen people the Authority and power over this earth it was to the Christian body isreal wherever he has scattered them now in the endtime the Bible state in proverbs 14:19 evil bow before the good and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.luke 10 18 to 20 it is to us the Christian the power is given over all our enemies spiritual and physical when God is in control you just cannot fight and win against him ever in the end you will lose your very soul the choice is your whoever you maybe God loves and mercy and forgiveness is for all and is not wishing for any of his created soul to be destroyed or perish your do the choosing.dont forget this is a Christian island nation the God of this island Christian body also part of Israel we are known my the God we worship and serve.

    • This is so true, the author of this article can Very well be an agent of darkness…. However if he reads revelations he will know which side have already won the battle. I pray for his soul salvation in Jesus name.

  2. You cannot run a country based on your religion. Many people do not believe in the Bible. They subscribe to the Quran, the Bhagwan Qita. I can’t imagine telling the population in Trinidad not to eat pork cause it’s against the Quran or you can have pre marital sex cause it’s against the teachings of the Bible. Imagine being jail cause you eat beef cause it’s against the belief of Hindus. If Christians were being jail for eating beef will be ridiculous so why jail people for having consentual same sex. Cause it’s against the Bible. Don’t make me laugh. Then pre marital sex should have the same passion

  3. Christian st Vincent and the grenadine do not embrace Adultery this is false! and is a lie we are united together against changing this law. no one is tell you or anyone how to live their life but when you want to change the law to make this grievous abomination sin against God legal we will as Christian will stand and fight against it.

  4. I am very pleased that you seem to know the scriptures…. However homosexual is a sin just like adultery, lying etc. We as believers preach and teach the word it is for those listening to search themselves and see the need for repentance then turn away from their sinful ways. However if we as God’s ambassador say yes to sin then we are going against what we preach or teach. People who commit buggery in secret or fornication etc are all living in sin. However we will not stand idly by and allow our Constitution to be changed to accommodate sin… There are other countries that had outlaw buggery I don’t see them staring down the barrel of a gun. Out nation maybe small but I am very sure you remember the story of David And Goliath. Our sling and stone is ready, Goliath shall be defeated. I don’t see the world going hard this racism happening around the world or even modern day slavery instead they are pursuing issues for their own sinful desires.

    • Matthew 12 :30 he that is not with Jehovah GOD Jesus Christ is against him! Christian take your stand!!

  5. Keep all yo nastiness to y’all selves. We the people condemn bulling. You want to bull go where its accepted plain and simple. Yall should be stoned to death

  6. Wow, all of these Christian hypocrites! Who are you or anyone else to tell someone how to live? There have been so many versions of the the bible over hundreds of centuries, which one is true from false? Is it the King James version? Because that one was born to suit those in power at the time. If we believe in God then we believe in loving everyone no matter their sexual orienation. Stop judging and imposing your beliefs on others. You who are constantly quoting the bible, look within your families first before going outside to try to change the world. I’m sure none can honestly say they have no sin within their own families. But you want to judge whose sin is greater?! Give me a break with that nonsense! Love human beings for just being human beings, no labels attached. The world would be a much better and happier place. People use religion as a tool to discriminate against others, if you really look at the bible, Jesus embraced all, the leapers, the sinners, the criminals so if he could do that then who are you to judge?! Just stop it!

    • read Luke 6:37-42
Paul tells us “all have sinned (committed hypocrisy) and fallen short of God’s standard” (Romans 3:23).
James tells us “we all stumble (commit hypocrisy) in many ways” (James 3:2).
Jesus brings a different truth than any religion, in that, instead of urging us to jump out of the impossible human cycle of hypocrisy, he says “come to me, accept what I’ve already done, stop trying to save yourself, I will give you rest.”

In the words of a relative: “The Church is like Noah’s ark. It sinks, but you better get on it or you’ll drown.” so hence you’re no bigger hypocrite than bugger causes we all pass judgement before taking the speck out of our own eyes ,we don’t see our sin but point out others sin ,am sure you’re living or doing something that is sinful ,then who is all of us to judge.
      LET GOD BE THE JUDGE.

  7. This is a Christian country established by God who scattered his body the Israelites where they are found today Hosea 1:10 we don’t call ourselves Israel anymore but the sons and daughters of the living God Christian the God of this island is Jehovah Jesus Christ

it is against the to pretend or to disguise yourself it is a misrepresentation for a male to put on make up and dress as a woman this is call an act of deception.

  8. At the end of the day in God eyes both homosexuality & adultery are wrong, but among humans adultery & homosexuality, though many may think it’s wrong based on their religious or non religious believe,Adultery is much more acceptable among them than homosexuality is & theres nothing anyone can do to have that not be.

    • Adultery is accountable amongst the none Christian or heathen her say it right man or whatever or whoever you are.

    • Adultery maybe acceptable amongst the none Christian or heathen none believer here say it right whoever or whatever your are .

  10. KJV Romans 1
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
    KJV Romans 1
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
    KJV Romans 1
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
    28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
    KJV Romans 1
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
