(By Ernesto Cooke) – With the spate of murders that took place in 2017 here in St Vincent, Vincentians may have another worry on their hand, this as the US have deported a number of aliens back to the island.
The 2017 report by (ICE) U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement noted that 96 persons in total, were deported back to the OECS and its associated countries.
Deportations to the OECS and associated states amounted to 65 in 2016.
Some 226,000 aliens with criminal and non-criminal backgrounds were removed from the United States of America in 2017.
Of the total 96, St Vincent and the Grenadines received 10. The report further stated that 13 Vincentians were deported in 2016.
According to the report, the number of removals overall went down 6 percent from the previous year, even as the authorities arrested far more people suspected of being in the United States illegally.
Deportations to other OECS countries are as follows;
Dominica 10, Grenada 15, St. Kitts-Nevis 16, Montserrat 0, Antigua -Barbuda 19, and St Lucia 23.
The associated states including the British Virgin Islands received 3, Anguilla 0. No data was available for Martinique.
Barbados received some 19 deportees.
Caribbean-wide, Haiti, received the highest amount with some 5,578, followed by the Dominican Republic 1,986, Jamaica 782, Cuba 160, Guyana 137 and Trinidad and Tobago 128.
