BREAKING NEWS: Saint Lucia declares state of emergency

(St Lucia News Online) – Saint Lucia has declared a state of emergency due to the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The declaration was signed by Governor General Emmanuel Neville Cenac on Monday.

“I am satisfied that a public emergency has arisen as a result of the occurrence 2019n-CoV, an infectious disease, commonly known as COVID-19,” the declaration by Cenac reads.

The Constitution of Saint Lucia gives the Governor General the power to declare a state of emergency after he or she is satisfied with the following:

-that a public emergency has arisen as a result of the imminence of a state of war between Saint Lucia and a foreign state

-that a public emergency has arisen as the result of the occurrence of any earthquake, hurricane, flood, fire, outbreak of pestilence or of infectious disease, or other calamity similar to the foregoing or not

– action has been taken, or is immediately threatened, by any person of such a nature and on so extensive scale, as to be likely to endanger the public safety or to deprive the community or any substantial portion of the community of supplies or services essential to life.

So far Saint Lucia has three cases of the dreaded virus.

  1. Before this was put in place why did no one care to help the thousands of crew ship team members who are citizens of st.lucia to get back home to there families. We are here with things getting worst each day and can’t get home to our love ones.

  2. This is the best policy put in place by the Governor in a diligent effort to curb the spread of covid-19. A mandatory 30 day “stay at home” declaration by Prime Minister Chastened should follow. All non essential businesses need to temporarily closed for the aforementioned period as well. Businesses like hair salons, nail salons, bars, sit in restaurants, movie theaters, any place with large gatherings etc. On the other hand, essential businesses like supermarkets, drugstores, gas stations, medical offices and the like should remain open. Everyone should wear surgical gloves when you are out running essential errands. Churches should streamline services online and on TV. If you do have services, practice six foot distancing between each other and do not serve communion at services. Always wash your hand under hot soapy water for 20 seconds as needed. If you are over 60 with or without pre existing conditions, stay home. Have someone else not within this high risk group, run your errands for you. Practice safety always and pray!!!!!

  3. I just heard that even Prince Charles has tested positive for covid-19. This pandemic is an equal opportunity offender. It is critical to continue to practice the safety protocol in place by health officials. Pre caution is better than cure. We all must work together as a team in this arduous effort to fight this invisible enemy called covid-19. Time to really hunker down and stay at home. Also, I have heard that patients with the virus are being given lots of vitamin C to help in the battle to defeat it. Stat alert for news updates daily. New York has started clinical trials with chloroquin at this time.

  4. I was a visitor in St Lucia in February and overwhelmed by its beauty and the warmth and friendliness of its people. I am so saddened that you too are suffering from this virus. Please follow the safety guidelines! Praying for you ❤️

  5. I read in an article that the people ordered to be under home quarantine are violating that order by going out in public with friends to bars and other places. This behavior is very shameful and inconsiderate of fellow islanders. The Prime Minister needs to put fines and jail time in place for all violators, immediately. A $1000 fine plus 6 months in jail. This is what some countries are doing to enforce new policies in place to curb covid-19 spread and fatalities. This is a serious pandemic and should not be taken lightly by anyone. We are all our brother’s keepers in this war against covid-19. Obey the law, practice safety guidelines and save lives. United you stand, divided you fall. Stay positive and keep hope alive for the nation as a whole.
