Martinique – COVID-19 Health Emergency Declared

Martinique is under a health emergency declared by French President  Emmanuel Macron and which went into effect on Tuesday in response to a surge in COVID-19 cases after health measures were relaxed in June.

Local news reports say Martinique recorded 1,000 COVID-19 cases within the space of one week, with the result that the Island’s Prefect, Stanislas Cazelles, has reintroduced a curfew from 9 p.m to 5 a.m.

He was also due to address a news conference Tuesday afternoon to announce additional measures.

The latest curfew will be in force for one month but may be extended if the situation of rising COVID-19 cases is not brought under control.

According to figures from the Regional Health Agency, as of Tuesday, July 6, 2021, 57,171 people or 17.63% of  over 12s had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, Martinique.France.Antilles reported.
