Couple arrested in death of pregnant woman found stuffed in suitcase

(NY DAILY NEWS) – A couple has been arrested in the death of a pregnant mother, who was found stuffed in a suitcase off the shoreline of a North Carolina river earlier this week.

Thomas Johnson and his girlfriend, Emmalei Trevathan were behind bars Saturday on charges of murder, murder of an unborn child, and concealment of a body, according to a press release from the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.

They were arrested during a traffic stop Wednesday in connection with the slaying of 28-year-old Brittany Samone Smith, initially reported missing by family earlier this month.

After days of desperate search efforts, first responders tipped off by officers from the Wake County Sheriff’s Office discovered a suitcase containing the remains of a pregnant female, near Neuse River, located along the state’s coast outside of Raleigh. The body was identified as that of Smith the same day her suspected murderers were taken into custody.

According to warrants obtained by CBS 17 on Thursday, Smith, who already had two children, was six months pregnant with a baby boy.

It’s not clear how authorities identified Trevathan, 24, and her 37-year-old boyfriend as suspects.

“On Monday, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office opened a homicide investigation, from a missing person’s case, following the discovery of a body stuffed in a bag, near the shoreline of the Neuse River, in Raleigh,” authorities said in a press release.

An investigation into Smith’s murder is ongoing.

Both Johnson and Trevathan were being held without bond.
