Baby’s head torn from body, falls on floor during childbirth

A newborn baby’s head fell on the floor after it was torn from its body during botched childbirth in Brazil.

The hospital where the baby was born is under investigation after health professionals reportedly made the 26-year-old mum give birth naturally – despite recommendations that she undergo a cesarean section.

The horrific decapitation took place at the Santa Casa de Misericordia hospital in the city of Belem, in the northern Brazilian state of Para, on Friday.

Medics had to surgically remove the rest of the baby from her body, while the shocked mum was sedated, her partner told local media.

Relatives of the mother told local media she had been advised to undergo a caesarian section, due to foetal health problems.

However, professionals at the hospital made her give birth naturally, local reports claimed.

The woman’s 25-year-old husband told Brazlian media that his partner was eight months’ pregnant and that she had arrived at the hospital by ambulance at around 6am that day.

He said their own doctor sent her to hospital with paperwork insisting the baby be delivered by a cesarean procedure.

According to a police report, the woman waited for more than three hours before being taken to the delivery room to give birth naturally, despite her doctor’s recommendation.

The woman’s friend who had accompanied her to the hospital told relatives and police that she had advised the medics numerous times that her pal could not undergo a natural birth.

However, the husband told local media: “They didn’t listen and kept telling her to push. They pushed so hard that the head came into the nurse’s hand and then fell to the floor. They only operated afterwards to remove the rest of the body.”

The mum’s friend, Amanda Vieira, told police that the delivery room was full of people at the time who witnessed the horrific birth.

The woman was then sedated before being operated on to remove the rest of the baby’s body.

Ms Vieira also told the police that nurses detected the child’s heart beating twice: once on the woman’s arrival at the hospital, and then again at the time of birth.

However, one of the health professionals allegedly claimed the baby was dead in the womb before the delivery.

The husband has told local media that his wife, who has a nine-year-old son from another relationship, is being kept in hospital in a state of shock.

He said she knows her child died, but not how. A police report has reportedly been filed.

The hospital released a statement expressing regret at what happened.

It said: “Due to being premature and having multiple fatal deformations and presenting soft tissue, several manoeuvres were performed to remove the baby, yet there were complications in the fatal extraction”.

The investigation is ongoing.
