(CIBS) – By Ashford Peters – “I want somebody to tell me how the farmers in my constituency can plant yam and reap potatoes from home. And I want them to tell me too how fisherman going throw seine to catch Spratt and go out on the boat to catch Robin and Jacks and Tuna by going on the computer.”
Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves made the comment at a press conference hosted by the Ministry of Health at the National Insurance Service (NIS) conference room last Friday.
He was addressing the matter of calls for government to lockdown the borders and the declare a state of emergency in a bid to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I heard it said that lockdown let everybody stay home. Well, some people may want to advocate staying home because they may not want to work that’s a minority, of course,” Dr Gonsalves said.
He said there are persons who speak very glibly saying ‘well, you know, you can continue to run the economy by working at home.’
Prime Minister Gonsalves said public servants, including those in his office, are working three days per week and they are still getting their full monthly salary.
“I want to say to you, having a state of emergency or having a curfew those are not necessary answers. As I said before we went on air that for those who have a state of emergency during, for all ours, your fundamental rights and freedom are suspended,” Dr Gonsalves said.
