Student dies in 150-ft plunge during ‘unsanctioned’ hike

(NY DAILY NEWS) – A 20-year-old college student fell to her death during a hike in upstate New York, authorities said Tuesday.

The victim plunged off a cliff in Hasbrouck Park, a few miles north of Poughkeepsie, around 9:50 p.m Monday.
“The student had been part of an unsanctioned hiking group that were exploring the old cement caves and trails,” the Kingston Police Department said in a statement.
The president of the State University of New York at New Paltz, Donald Christian, later identified the student as Rochester resident and visual arts major Katherine Vollmer.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to Katherine’s family and friends and to the students and staff who knew her,” he said in a statement.
While hiking, the group got lost and ended up near the edge of a cliff, authorities said. As they tried to climb down and return to their vehicles, Vollmer apparently slipped, falling some 150 feet.
Authorities were called immediately after the incident. However, because the area where she fell was very difficult to reach and required a rope team, rescuers had to wait until morning to get to her.

Her body was recovered early Tuesday, police said.
