Storm Dorian To Become Hurricane By Tuesday

Tropical Storm Dorian is drawing the attention of the National Hurricane Center forecasters, who believe it will become the first hurricane of the season by Tuesday.

The hurricane center said Dorian is expected to strengthen gradually and “could be near hurricane strength when it approaches the central Lesser Antilles on Tuesday.”

The outlook calls for maximum sustained winds of 80 mph by then, but the NHC noted that there is not a 100 percent confidence in the storm’s forecast intensity.

As of Sunday morning, Dorian’s tropical-storm-force winds extended outward up to 25 miles from its center.
In a forecast discussion posted on the National Hurricane Center site, it was noted that the storm’s development is being limited by southeasterly shear and nearby dry air.
The NHC, in its key messages about the storm, noted “it is too soon to determine the specific timing or magnitude of impacts in the Lesser Antilles, but tropical storm or hurricane watches will likely be needed for a portion of the islands on Sunday.”
