NYPD cop killed in crash on his wedding day

(NY DAILY NEWS) – Two off-duty NYPD officers were killed — one of them just newly married — when their car ran off the road and smashed into a tree in upstate New York, authorities said.

John Martinez, 39, of Hauppauge was driving a 2018 Maserati Sunday at about 11:20 p.m. when the car veered off the road in the Ulster County town of Shandaken.
In the passenger seat was Michael Colangelo, 31, of Huntington, who earlier Sunday had gotten married to his sweetheart, Katherine Berger, at the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian N.Y.
The car hit a large tree, flipped out and slid to a stop. Medics said both men died at the scene.
A third person was taken to Albany Medical Center and was expected to survive.

Colangelo and Berger planned to go to Costa Rica for their honeymoon and asked pals to contribute to help fund the trip.

“We know it’s not traditional but it would be a lot of fun, to have some items on our wedding list that will help us catch some sun!” the couple wrote on honeyfund.com.
“So if you’d like to give a gift to send us on our way, a donation to our honeymoon would really make our day!”
The NYPD confirmed the deaths but declined further comment. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
“On May 20th shortly before midnight the NYPD was notified by the New York State Police that Police Officer John Martinez assigned to the 84 Precinct Detective Squad and Police Officer Michael Colangelo assigned to the Canine Unit were involved in a single vehicle collision in Ulster County, N.Y.,” the NYPD said.

“The two officers were pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is continuing by the New York State Police.”
