(CNS) – At least two members of a family, including a nine-year-old girl, were killed as heavy rains battered the French-speaking Caribbean island over the past 48 hours.
The Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) said that the rains on Wednesday and Thursday had affected several areas, especially on the Central Plateau, causing the deaths of the unidentified 29-year-old woman and the child.
The DPC said that they died when a wall collapsed on their home in Mont-Carmel, a village in the commune of Mirebalais and that the husband has been admitted to the University Hospital of Mirebalais, suffering from several injuries.
The Hydro-meteorological Unit of Haiti (UHM) is forecasting continued heavy rainfall, especially on the South-East, West and Artibonite. It warned that the departments of North West, North, Center, Nippes, South and Grand Anse, are likely to be flooded.
Earlier this week, the UHM issued a flood, landslide notice warning also that the rains could intensify on Friday and the DPC has since called on the population especially those in high-risk areas to remain vigilant and to apply the usual safety instructions.
