Boy in viral photo feared dead after family’s SUV drives off cliff

(NY POST) – A boy whose image went viral during the national unrest following a police shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, is feared dead after his family’s SUV went off a cliff in Northern California.

The location of Devonte Hart — who had an emotional embrace with a Portland police officer during a 2014 protest — was still unknown on Wednesday, according to Portland’s KGW-TV.Devonte’s adoptive parents, Jennifer and Sarah Hart, both 39, died Monday when their GMC Yukon drove off a cliff on a scenic highway, plunging 100 feet below.

The two women were found dead inside the vehicle while the bodies of 19-year-old Markis, 14-year-old Jeremiah and 14-year-old Abigail were found lying outside the vehicle.

Police believe that Devonte, 15, along with Markis, Jeremiah and Abigail, were also in the SUV, but their bodies have not been recovered.

Search and rescue teams continued to look for the missing siblings. The California Highway Patrol are trying to determine why the SUV went off the cliff.

Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allmon said investigators have no reason to believe the crash was intentional.
“There were no skid marks, there were no brake marks” at the turnout on the Pacific Coast Highway where the vehicle went over, Allmon said.
The family lived in a small city outside Portland. Neighbors said there had recently been domestic issues at the home.
