CARICOM Endorses SVG Bid For UN Security Council Seat

Caricom Heads of government have endorsed the bid of SVG to seek a seat on the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member for the years 2020-2021.

There are five permanent members, USA, CHINA, RUSSIA, UK, and FRANCE all with veto powers, the 10 non-permanent members are allocated across different regions of the world.

Prime Minister Gonsalves said while it is a worldwide election it is good when you come out with the backing of your region, which is Latin America and the Caribbean region.

Gonsalves said all 14 Caricom nations with responsible leaders said yes, they are endorsing SVG for June 2019 when the elections take place.

“ We would be the smallest country ever in the history of the United Nations, if we win the elections to sit on the security council to determine issues of war and peace”.

“ Of course our security focus would be on climate change, poverty and under development, they cause war, they disturb peace and security, we don’t have an army”.

Gonsalves said despite that fact, we are seen in such a light that we can go forward with the support of the region to see if we can become a non-permanent member.
