BELIZE – Police detain one person as baby is sexually molested

(CNS) – Police have detained one person for questioning in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 17-month-old baby.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Alejandro Cowo did not identify for detainee, but media reports here said that he is the 21-year-old stepfather of the baby, who recently moved into the home with the mother.

Cowo confirmed that the police were called to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, along with Department of Human Services, where “they were informed that there was a minor with several bruises to the body and apparently the minor had been sexually molested.

“The minor had to be rushed to the IC Unit because of the condition the minor was in,” he said, telling reporters that “we know that the minor is still presently admitted in the paediatric ward in a critical condition at the KHMH”.

Media reports here said that the baby had been left in the care of the detainee by her grandmother, who had travelled from the Maskall Village to the capital.

The reports said that on her return to the village she was told by the man that the child was not well and having convulsions. The baby was taken to the clinic in Maskall Village and then rushed to the hospital.
