Bacchus, Cummings – wants to ride on the back of Farrell’s dilemma

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves speaking on Star Fm said he is disheartened by comments from opposition members  Hon Daniel Cummings and Kay Bacchus-Baptiste which were made via radio on Tuesday morning.(23rd January 2018).

The Prime Minister was speaking about Yugge Farrell who was charged that on Thursday, January 4 at Granby Street, Kingstown, she did cause a breach of the peace by using abusive language to Karen Duncan-Gonsalves of Prospect, accosting the defendant and referring to her in an outburst:  “You dirty b**ch.”

Gonsalves said Daniel Cummings and Kay Bacchus –Baptiste want to ride on the back of Farrell who is currently under observation at the Mental Health Centre.

“It’s astounding that people want to take advantage, want to mount a campaign for political advantage on the back of this young lady, it is something that is disgusting and people like Cummings and Bacchus should be a shame of themselves”.

“They were posed a question by Dwight Joesph, the one which I posed, what has Camilo or his wife done wrong, and according to them, the wrong that Camilo has done is not to talk, yet they are calling on him to resign, how do you square these things, you responded to every allegation by someone who on all accounts has a mental issue, and that is being investigated”.

Gonsalves said that they have become the psychiatrist , they have become experts in every single field, and they are allowing their thirst for political power to get away with them.

“ First of all the Mental Health Act makes it plain that the magistrate who sent her for observation in the first place has the authority so to do”.

Farrell return to court on Monday 22nd January, and a report was submitted which was not read in court but was shared with the defence and prosecution, however the new magistrate in that of Rickie Burnett sent her back to the mental health centre for another week of observation on the basis of the report , she would return to court on Monday 29th January 2018.

Gonsalves said the report was not read but enough was said in the court to make it plain to everyone that she has a mental issue and needs treatment, not just simple observation.

“Does anybody know who saw her, do they know the professionals who saw her, which professional made the assessment of her”, do they?

Gonsalves said the person who signed the medical report has a particular authority by being a medical practitioner, but more than that they don’t know the qualification of this doctor, he lamented.

“ I have been advised that this doctor has post-graduate training in psychiatry, do they know if there was consultation with other doctors including persons in the country who are trained in psychiatry, do they all of these things, or any of them”.

“ I heard they are reading out drugs which were administered to this young lady, but if you are a patient in a hospital you would expect to be treated in addition to being observed”.

Gonsalves said he is not defending any doctor anywhere, but stating that these people who are talking are doing so without any information, presenting a mountain of falsehoods, and disseminating it in a very irresponsible manner.

Gonsalves further stated that there is a process set out in law, where you have persons who are medical practitioners, including persons who trained in the field of physiatry who have attended to the young lady.

“ Why do they want to make partisan politics out of something, which simply involved having a young woman evaluated, treated, and see if she can come back to full health, but yet they have gone off on a series of political tangents for their own political purpose, this thing is absolutely sickening”.

Gonsalves noted that he was not talking about any rights or wrongs, but an alarm,  that people will seek a political advantage on the basis of somebody who clearly has a mental problem.
