The leader of the Opposition Dr Godwin Friday says the collection of taxes would improve government fiscal position, however, it does not necessarily generate growth.
Friday disclosed this to the media at his press conference on Wednesday 17th January 2018.
The Opposition leader said what is needed is for the economy to grow, attract investments domestic and foreign capital.
He said such is not currently taking place in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
“ The fact that taxes are not being collected is nothing new, it plagues all government, and it as a result of inefficiency”.
Recently Prime Minister Gonsalves told the nation that some 301.8 Million dollars were owed to the state in taxes.
Friday further stated that collecting taxes is something you always work at, he noted that the IMF spoke about it and mention ways in which the collection of revenues can be done, something to which his party will support.
Friday said if the government were to collect the outstanding taxes what would they do with it?
“ What are they going to do with the money? that’s where we have no confidence in this government because in the past they have not use the money to generate long-term economic sustainability”.
