Manafort and Gates charged with ‘Conspiracy against the US’

(CNN) – White House lawyers are discussing developments regarding Paul Manafort and Rich Gates with the President this morning, an official confirms.

The administration has no immediate comment as of now, an official said. But the legal team is likely to address this today, but not until the full scope of the charges are understood, according to the official.

The Special Counsel announced that Paul Manafort and Richard Gates have been indicted by a federal grand jury. The 12-count indictment is on “conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, an unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading FARA statements, false statements, and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts.”

The charges do not cover any activities related to the campaign, though superceding indictments remain possible. The case was unsealed today after the defendants were permitted to surrender themselves to the custody of the FBI.
