Kids from the Grass Roots Tennis Club got their chance to meet with Tim Henman OBE, retired English professional tennis player.
The children made their way to Mustique island via a boat trip with Director Grant Connel.
Henman is presently a guest of the Mustique Tennis Club for a charity and boost to the clubs program.
Director of the Mustique Tennis Club Mr Richard Schaffer extended an invitation to the Grass Roots Tennis Center after inquiries were made by GTC Director.
The youths from the GTC were put through drills on the court with Henman and interacted with kids from the MTC.
Richard Schaffer Director of the MTC said: “it was a pleasure having the team from the GTC join in the event, the visit could be the start of great things”.
“ The Mustique Tennis Club and the Grass Roots Tennis Center have a great relationship which was strengthened during the birth of the Grenadines Cup, GTC still holds the championship trophy, we continue to monitor the growth of the club and appreciate the dedication to the sport and their crossing the ocean in those waters to be here is testimony to that ”.
Schaffer said the club in its short span has created good young players;
“ Antonio Caine is growing into quite a player and tennis can provide opportunities for him, I hope they continue to grow and the club has my full support ”.
Director of GTC Grant Connell thanked Schaffer for his kind invitation and said that the visit has boosted the GTC youths and it would serve them well as they prepare for tournaments in Antigua, St Lucia, Barbados and Martinique.
Connell said he was really impressed by how humble the former champion was and the gentle manner in which he interacted with the kids and was able to make them feel so at home.
“ He is a true champion…I am certain our head coach Trevor Sams interaction with Henman will all be beneficial to GTC, it’s hard to keep the grassroots down”.
“It’s only one way it can grow….cut you may grow it must”, Connell said. (By Ernesto Cooke)
